What is positive psychology?

Positive psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on studying and promoting human well-being, happiness, and flourishing. Unlike traditional psychology, which often focuses on addressing mental illness and dysfunction, positive psychology seeks to understand the factors that contribute to a fulfilling and meaningful life. It explores topics such as happiness, resilience, optimism, gratitude, mindfulness, and character strengths.

Positive psychology aims to identify the conditions and practices that enable individuals to thrive and lead fulfilling lives, both personally and professionally. By studying positive emotions, traits, and behaviors, positive psychology offers insights into how people can enhance their overall quality of life and build resilience in the face of adversity. In this light, strengths are at the focus of the positive psychology research.
